Is nepotism a form of favouritism toward friends?

[edit]

Many others, as well as myself, have edited the article page to remove references to nepotism being used in relation to friends, as the cited dictionary sources do not support this usage, nor do any other major dictionaries. However, this keeps being re-added, so I believe this issue needs to be settled for the article to stay coherent as it later used in examples to mean favouritism towards friends. For now, I have instead opted to add a WP:CITENEED to the claim rather than edit it again. I look forward to everyone’s input. --Tanszism (talk) 15:44, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I see that the reference you have WP:CITENEEDed is in the lead; the lead is designed to be a précis of what is in the article and having checked, there are only two potential mentions of friends being the beneficiaries of nepotism, in Kirchnerist Argentina and Putin's childhood friend; as neither of these is either of English source or language nor clearly defined as nepotism, the inclusion in the lead is, perhaps, incorrect. I will join with those who have taken it out. It is possible that the word has been expanded in meaning in more recent years, but i would want to see a reasonable and reliable source for that before agreeing with it; if such exists, and is incorporated meaningfully into the body of the article, then the addition could be put back to the lead ~ LindsayHello 16:45, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
